Set in the heart of 1066 country, historical Hastings is one of
the famous Cinque Ports along with nearby Battle and Rye. It is
still one of the busiest active fishing ports in Europe and our
beach launched fishing fleet continues to use traditional methods.
Unique to Hastings, the original wooden fishing huts can still be
found on the seafront.
William the Conqueror built the first Norman Castle
on the West Hill above the town, whilst below the Castle are St
Clements caves, which are thought to have been used by Smugglers.
Recently rejuvenated with Lottery Funding, Alexandra
Park was opened in 1864 and is still going strong with many popular
outdoor events taking place throughout the year. The boating lake
and bandstand are outstanding features, along with beautiful landscaped
gardens and sculptures.
The West Hill cliff railway will take you from
the picturesque Old Town to the castle where a breathtaking view
over the English Channel and the town can be seen. You will find
the newly restored pier along the 3 miles of promenade with the
White Rock Theatre. The pier was originally opened in 1872.
With many historical attractions, Hastings is
still a busy seaside town with a modern shopping centre and striking
new architecture to compliment the traditional buildings.
